Hemp Build Podcast: Ep. 2 Seed to Structure: Understanding U.S. Hemp Supply Chains for Building Materials
This course provides architects, builders, engineers, and design professionals with a rare inside look at how U.S.-grown industrial hemp becomes a consistent, safe, performance-verified building material. Through a detailed discussion with Melissa Nelson of South Bend Industrial Hemp—a crop research scientist and one of the Midwest’s first commercial-scale processors—participants will examine the entire “seed to structure” pathway: genetics selection, agronomy, harvesting, processing, quality control, third-party testing, batch traceability, and supply chain planning for construction. The episode explores how each stage of hemp production affects material performance, durability, fire resistance, moisture behavior, indoor air quality, and building safety. The conversation also covers insurance considerations, documentation that supports code compliance and environmental certifications, and the emerging ASTM/CEN testing frameworks shaping U.S. standards. The course concludes with practical guidance for architects on vetting suppliers, specifying hemp-based materials, and collaborating effectively with the agricultural and processing sectors to ensure predictable, safe, and healthy project outcomes.
