A British streaming video production company is looking for unique North American homes under construction and producers are especially interested in the use of unconventional materials.

Plimsoll Productions has announced a call for entries for a new property docuseries focused on unique architectural projects across the United States and Canada. The series, developed for an international streaming platform, is seeking homeowners and builders who are creating "truly original spaces" using "inventive construction techniques," producers say.

The right hempcrete project would definitely qualify, producers told HempBuild Mag.

”Obviously we want them to be beautiful, but we're not talking big mansions,” Plimsoll Productions producer Lucy Davies said in an interview.  “We're talking unique, aesthetically beautiful homes that have people's personalities shining through,” she added.

The homes must be under construction over the next 18 months so filmmakers can document the construction process for the show, which will air in 2027. “Basically, if they don't have a roof, we'd like to check them out,” Davies said.

The series still has some mystery about it, with final details such as the host and network still under wraps. Plimsoll says the series will be led by an "A-list celebrity host who has a deep passion for architecture." Each episode is designed to document the "physical journey of the build, from  its earliest stages, through construction, and to the final fit," the production company said.

Producers are primarily targeting single-family residential dwellings. The production team is looking for "projects with offbeat design" and "unmistakable personality," whether the "permits have just been approved or the ground has already been broken."

Beyond the technical aspects of construction, the series intends to "follow the emotional journey of the future homeowners: celebrating the passion and resilience it takes to bring such a personal vision to life." Each episode will conclude with a "stunning reveal of the home" to highlight the work of the architects, owners, and craftspeople involved, a press release said.

Hempcrete in the Public Eye

Hempcrete has been the subject of design shows before, most notably Kevin McCloud’s long-running BBC 4 series Grand Designs, which in 2011 featured an entire housing development of 42 hempcrete homes  in Swindon, UK called “the Triangle”. The 2013 US documentary Bringing it Home featured the project. McCloud featured hempcrete again last year in an episode.

The Discovery Channel also featured a 2021 hempcrete build in California in collaboration with Toni Laderach and Paul "River" Richardson.

There is no cost to apply for your project to be featured in the new design streaming series, but homeowners also won’t be paid, Davies said. Plimsoll Productions has previously developed content for global networks including Netflix, Apple TV, Disney+, and the BBC, the company said.
