International Hemp Builders to Gather in Berlin

By HempBuild Mag

German hempcrete builders will welcome international hempcrete designers, builders and suppliers at a free open house event in June in a cutting-edge tech startup hub.

Members of Berlin-based CannaBau Technik will host an informal gathering 11 June at the Hemp Building Meetup Berlin at the .GUT am Flughafen 1 a tech startup hub created in the repurposed Tegel airport in Berlin.

The event is a satellite networking event aligned with the 22nd Annual European Industrial Hemp Association (EIHA) Conference.

“So far we’re expecting hemp building pros from Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and the UK, and more to come,” said co-organizer and HempBuildMag publisher Jean Lotus. Additionally, German local politicians, curious builders and other tech companies at the startup hub have received invitations, she said.

CannaBau is one of the close confederation of Germany companies working together to advance the industry affiliated with the Hanfbaukollektiv and Nutzhanf Netzwerk e.V.

Members of the collective include CannaBau co-founders CEO Gökcan Güney and architect Roger Bauer as well as Tübingen-based Henrik Pauly and Felix Drewes, of Klimapraxis gemeinnützige UG.

CannaBau creates hemp-lime (hempcrete) blocks for construction and has worked with architects and designers to build multiple projects in Germany.

“Hempcrete is not our invention, but we aim to be the first in the German market to receive certification from local authorities,” CEO Güney told Gica Magazine. ”Additionally, our product dimensions are specified according to German construction standards.”

The .GUT am Flughafen 1 startup hub is a project of the Urban Tech Republic, which is spearheading the reimagined reuse of the 500 hectares of the former Tegel airport which closed in 2021. With the goal of “Building the city of the future” the startups in the hub include incubators for renewable energies, the circular economy, e-mobility and sustainable construction.‍ The site even includes an open air rave club, Turbulence.
