Hemp Voices: Sergiy 'Doctor Hemphouse" Kovalenkov, Hempire
Sergiy “Doctor Hemphouse” Kovalenkov is founder and CEO of Hempire Holdings based in Ukraine and Colorado.
This year, I’ve observed how hemp-lime performs in different climates from extremely cold places like Canada to tropical climates like Thailand. I like to see how different varieties of hemp are cultivated in different climates.
What was a win for your company in the past year?
Hempire has started to supply materials and execute projects in Thailand. We are happy to expand to the Asian market. Also, We have started to supply our binders to the largest commercial project in the United States - Kosmos Stargazing Resort in Colorado.
What is something about hemp building/construction/processing you didn’t know a year ago?
You have to be extremely careful about using this material in a tropical climate. A thick layer of dense hemp-lime, lack of sun, lack of ventilation and high humidity can help mold show up on the surface of the hemp-lime wall.
What bottlenecks or challenges have you observed in the industrial hemp industry and how would you solve them?
We have a lack of funding and government support for farmers to start serious cultivation and processing operations. There is also a lack of awareness and ignorance from architects and government officials, which slows down the expansion of the hemp building sector. This sector needs environmentally conscious investors, who are willing to go “all-in” and become part of something really big and beneficial for the society and the environment. More educational programs must be implemented on all levels to breed new kinds of architects and builders.
