Hemp Voices: Phelan Dalton, The Hemp Building Company

Phelan Dalton is CEO of Colorado-based The Hemp Building Company in charge of project management, material distribution and client consultations.

I am a project manager for hemplime builds, I do lime and clay plastering, I organize shipment and delivery of necessary materials, I do marketing, sales, provide onsite training and hold in-person workshops. I do consultations with homeowners, builders and engineer architects to ensure designs and framing are installed correctly for hemplime installation.

I am intrigued by hemp-lime's versatility in building, its forgiving nature, and easy repairability. We build homes in harsh climates above 5000' elevation and fire-danger zones. Our clients report that their homes' performance exceeds expectations. And so I continue to be fascinated by hemp-lime's thermal and hygroscopic capabilities.

What was a win for your company in the past year?

Last year we completed a few Hemp Building Company projects and also got the opportunity to assist in the completion of other builds. We worked on projects that utilized hemp blocks, panels, spray application, and cast in-situ. We are always trying to expand our breadth of knowledge working with this material and last year we had some great opportunities to do so.

What is something about hemp building/construction/processing you didn’t know a year ago?

Completing our project in La Veta, Colorado, taught me a great deal about lime plastering over hemp-lime, acquiring numerous new techniques and skills.

What challenges does the hemp building industry face that it must overcome in the next five years?

I believe the industry will face growing pains due to lack of workforce trained in hemp-lime installation and homeowners may have to push their project timelines back because there are not enough hemp-lime builders.
